When to Replace Carpet, and What Replacement Costs in Central North Carolina

The carpet in most central North Carolina homes is not worn out when it gets replaced. It is matted down the hallway, faded in front of the patio door, holding a smell nobody can get out, or rippled where it was never stretched properly. Some of those mean the carpet is done. Some of them do not. This guide covers how to tell the difference, what carpet replacement costs across Willow Spring, Apex, Garner, Holly Springs and Bonsal, what the quote is made of, and the two lines where a cheap quote costs you money.
Signs a carpet is actually finished
Carpet fails in predictable ways, and only some of them are terminal.
- ✓Matting and crushing in the traffic lanes that does not lift after a professional clean. The fibers have given up standing. This is the most common end of a carpet's life and it cannot be repaired.
- ✓Fuzzing or splayed fiber tips where people walk. The twist in the yarn has failed. Also permanent.
- ✓Fading in front of south-facing windows or patio doors. Surface-dyed fibers lose color to sunlight and it does not come back.
- ✓Smells that survive cleaning. A pet accident that reached the pad and subfloor cannot be cleaned out from the top. The pad is the problem, and it comes out with the carpet.
- ✓Wear-through or bald patches. Rare in a residential carpet under fifteen years old, but conclusive.
- ✓Delamination, where the backing separates from the pile and the carpet feels loose or bubbled. Usually from a flood or repeated wet cleaning.
Signs that are not the carpet's fault
Ripples and waves across a room, and loose seams, are installation faults rather than worn carpet. A carpet that was kicked in rather than power-stretched goes wavy within a few years, and it can usually be lifted, re-stretched and re-trimmed for a fraction of the cost of replacing it, provided the carpet itself is still sound. We covered this in carpet ripples and loose seams: repair or replace? and it is a real service, see carpet re-stretch and repair.
A carpet that is dull but not matted often just needs a proper hot-water extraction clean. Try that before pricing a replacement.
What carpet replacement costs in central NC
Installed carpet with pad in central North Carolina typically runs from around three dollars per square foot for a basic polyester in a bedroom, up to eight to twelve dollars per square foot for a dense nylon, a triexta like Mohawk SmartStrand, or a patterned Karastan. Most families replacing several bedrooms and a hallway land somewhere in the middle, and a whole upstairs with stairs is a job in the low-to-mid thousands.
Those are market ranges rather than a price list. We measure in the home, because a number produced from a floor plan misses the waste, the stairs and whatever is under the old carpet, and those are exactly the things that move the number.
The four lines inside the quote
The carpet. Priced by the square yard in the trade and shown to you by the square foot. Fiber, density and construction decide it, and we explained how to read a sample in how to choose carpet that lasts.
The pad. The cushion under the carpet. It decides how the carpet feels, how quiet the room is and how long the carpet lasts, because it absorbs the impact that would otherwise crush the fibers. It is also the first line thinned to make a quote look cheaper.
Labor. Removing the old carpet and pad, inspecting the subfloor, laying new pad, power-stretching the carpet, seaming and finishing at every transition. Stairs are their own line, because every tread is a separate fitting.
Removal and disposal. We take the old carpet and pad away as part of the job.
What moves the number
The specification is the biggest variable. A low-density polyester and a dense nylon can be two or three times apart in material cost, and the dense nylon is the one that still looks right in year eight in a hallway. Putting the money where the traffic is and letting the bedrooms take something softer normally saves money overall.
Stairs add time. A flight of stairs takes longer than a large bedroom and is quoted separately. Waste adds material: carpet comes in rolls of a fixed width, and an L-shaped room or a pattern that has to match across a seam uses more than the floor area suggests. And the subfloor can add a line, particularly where a pet accident has reached it and it needs sealing or replacing before new carpet goes down. Subfloor repair covers what we find.
Where a cheap quote costs money
Two places, and we see both on carpets somebody else installed.
The pad. A cheap pad under a good carpet gives you a floor that feels cheap and wears early, and it can void the manufacturer's warranty, which publishes a minimum pad specification. Most residential carpet wants a pad around 7/16 inch at roughly 6 to 8 pound density, firmer on stairs, and a moisture-barrier pad in any home with pets.
The stretch. Carpet that is kicked in rather than power-stretched goes wavy within a couple of years, and a ripple in a hallway is both a trip hazard and a wear line. Our background-checked, trained installers power-stretch every carpet, and it is why the floors we install do not come back for re-stretching.
Replacing carpet with something else
Plenty of families in Apex and Holly Springs replace hallway or family room carpet with a hard surface and keep carpet in the bedrooms. That is often the right call: a hard floor in the traffic lane and carpet where people go barefoot. Pet-friendly flooring for NC covers the options if animals are the reason the old carpet is going.
